Hurricane Disaster Recovery
FEMA at the helm of recovery A shout out to the men and women of FEMA and associated organizations for their tremendous collaborative supply-chain effort. To provide Texas residents and businesses much needed recovery and relief efforts as seen from the FEMA list of crucial products and services in these critical hours of need. A perfect example of managing the creation of essential value and its delivery. Managing such response with the immediacy it deserves and on such a scale of epic proportions is extremely laudable and most of all gives hope to the men, women, and children of Texas. For a quick recap of the FEMA list of products and services available for Texans are as follows: 1. Individual Disaster Assistance Federal program (by phone or in person) 2. Low-interest, long-term disaster loans for businesses, landlords, private non-profits such as places of worship, homeowners and renters 3. If declined then apply for Other Needs Assistance (ONA) for items such as personal property, vehicle repair and replacement, and moving and storage expenses 4. Grants that cover certain needs such as childcare, and medical and dental expenses (no loan required) 5. One-month expedited rental expense when home is uninhabitable 6. One-time payment of a Critical Needs Assistance to a displaced household for covering urgent disaster related needs such as food, prescriptions, infant formula, diapers, gas for transportation and medical supplies 7. Information management and dissemination for rumor control, survivor's checklist, residents and communities mitigation page, rebuilding resources, and a library of disaster recovery videos and resources Although not an exhaustive list in the grand scheme of things, this is definitely a core set of efforts to address the strategic recovery objectives to meet their customers' needs where time is of the essence. Not to forget the parallel efforts of the utilities, law enforcement, and other public services that require some degree of collaboration and synchronization. What could be some other strategic recovery objectives? How about businesses that cannot pay salaries or on the other side of the same coin is the problem of employees whose work schedules are totally disrupted, hence no earnings? Those of us outside the disaster zone are now out-of-the-box thinkers? References Texas Hurricane Harvey (DR-4332) September 17th 2017.
